Asylum and Immigration
It all begins with an idea.
The asylum and immigration system is a contentious political issue. It is even more essential in the current climate that, where claims or decisions may be affected by mental health issues and mental health related risks, fair and objective expert medico-legal reporting is available to decision-makers.
Dr Alikhan has over 10 years’ experience in preparation of reports in Asylum and Immigration cases, with substantial direct clinical experience acquired through volunteering for several years as a psychiatrist, therapist and medico-legal report doctor at Freedom From Torture. He is trained in the documentation of torture and trauma as described in the Istanbul Protocol. Reports are compliant with the Immigration and Asylum Tribunal Procedure Rules and he has prepared reports for the Upper Tribunal. Dr Alikhan also has a Masters’ in Law (LLM, Mental Health Law) and remains aware of developments in law more broadly including immigration case law to understand the changing contexts in which clients with mental health symptoms may present.
Assessment of conditions such as depression, anxiety, adjustment disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder can be critical to the outcomes of asylum and immigration cases.
Dr Alikhan has prepared reports in immigration cases addressing a wide range of issues such as:
Post-traumatic stress disorder and effects on autobiographical memory
Risk of mental health deterioration and risk of suicide on deportation
Measures to support appellants with a history of trauma giving evidence at hearings
Civil claim against the Home Office for unlawful detention
Assessment of potential feigning or exaggerating of symptoms in the context of a claim
